Ever wondered whether it is better to heat water on a low or high temperature setting? Well, this experiment is designed to answer that burning question that you have desired to know the answer to for so long. The most common uses for a heating element are stoves, dryers, portable heaters, ovens of all sorts and water heaters. The first electric water heater was created in 1889 by a Norwegian mechanical engineer by the name of Edwin Ruud. How the water is heated depends on the medium used to heat the water. Electric water heaters heat the water by super-heating coils and the heat that the coils give off heats the water. The heating element that we are going to be using is a variable voltage filtered power supply. To measure the efficiency of our coil of wire, we are going to calculate the joules of heat transferred to the water using the formulae Q=mcΔT, taken that 1 milliliter of water is equal to 1 gram of water. To measure the efficiency of the heater, we will use the formulae Output/Input. |
